DC Choro

Performing a unique mix of Brazilian music from different regions and eras, DC Choro specializes in choro or chorinho, instrumental music with intricate melodies and counterpoint, swinging rhythms, and rich harmonies rooted in early-1900’s Rio de Janeiro. The band brings keen musicianship and great energy to Brazilian popular musical genres including samba, bossa nova, and forro, a style from Brazil’s northeast featuring call-and-response vocal lines over a rousing dance rhythm. Showcasing traditional instruments like the seven-string guitar, cavaquinho (a small four-stringed instrument), rebolo (a hand drum), clarinet, trombone, and assorted Brazilian hand percussion instruments, DC Choro brings irresistible Brazilian sounds to the Washington, DC area and beyond.

The band is very proud to support ABRACE’s programs by presenting at this special night.

Laura Rizzotto

Laura started performing her own songs in the music scene of Rio de Janeiro at the age of 15. Her first record deal, with Universal Music Brazil, came up at the age of 16. Her debut studio album “Made in Rio”, released in 2011, was produced by British musician Paul Ralphes and the track “Who You Are” by Brazilian jazz legend Eumir Deodato.

In a bold move, she decided to give a break at her rising career in Brazil and move to Boston in April 2012 to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree at Berklee College of Music.

Laura currently lives in Los Angeles, and studies at the California Institute of the Arts. She released her sophomore studio album, “Reason To Stay”, on January 16th, 2014. The album features 11 original tracks written and published by Laura, 3 of them in collaboration with her 21-year-old brother, Lucas. “Reason To Stay” was produced in Los Angeles and Tokyo by Nicolas Farmakalidis and mastered by Grammy award winner sound engineer Brad Blackwood.

Laura is excited to honor ABRACE’s cause with her first show in the DC area.

ABADÁ Capoeira DC – Professora Yara

CAPOEIRA is an Afro-Brazilian martial art and self-defense discipline that brings together fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs, in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. Abadá-capoeira is represented throughout Brazil and in over 50 countries preserving, developing, and sharing the art of capoeira with integrity and respect and seeking to inspire and empower people to realize their full potential as responsible, confident, productive members of society. In the DC, MD and VA area, Abadá-capoeira is under the guidance of Professora Yara, who has been a capoeira practitioner for over thirty years, traveling around the world showing this art and teaching it for over fifteen years, working with the most diverse groups: children, adolescents, adults, people with special needs, and the elderly.

Yara is a long-time partner of ABRACE on cultural initiatives and is very enthusiastic about the organization’s programs and events.
