The Association for Brazilian Culture and Education – ABRACE is the only nonprofit organization in DC, MD and VA entirely dedicated to promoting Brazil’s culture and language to children aged 3 to 14. We are not just a language school. We are a tight-knit group of families who are proud of our Brazilian background and work to provide our children living in the United States a chance to experience and celebrate our rich and diverse culture. Over 120 students meet every Saturday morning at Langley High School to learn Portuguese as a Heritage Language and carry out educational activities centered around our customs and traditions, including food, music, folklore, sports, history and more.
As a community association, we are run by a small group of talented professionals and depend largely on donations and volunteers to fulfill our mission. Since we began in 2005, we have served more than 1500 students and their families with language classes, cultural fairs, story time for babies, literacy picnics, youth volunteering program, and a library with more than 1,500 books in Portuguese.
Over the past 17 years, ABRACE has become a leader in the field of community-based heritage language schools, with our innovative programs and experienced leadership having been featured in international conferences. It has been a successful yet challenging journey, but we can’t keep growing without your support. More recently, the global COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on our finances and operations, but we have been gradually returning to “normal” and hope to be able to accomplish even more thanks to your support.
Our goal is to raise US $20,000 by December 31st. Please donate by clicking on the Facebook (no fees) or Donate buttons (PayPal, with fees; no need to have an account) below, or by sending a check to PO Box 813, McLean, VA 22101 made out to ABRACE Inc.
Thank you for your generosity!
